Mind-Body Connection

As we all know there is a strong connection between the ways our bodies and our minds interact and work together. We have all heard about things like “you are what you eat” and the way we choose to look at our relationship with food is definitely going to connect us with a perspective of  our choice. I think that while we are all aware in some way or another of this very deep relation between body and mind, we sometimes just take it for granted and forget about the idea that we do have a choice to make in order to be happy and live happy and fulfilling lives.

One of the first things that come to mind when we think about the connection between our bodies and our minds is the idea that the food that we eat is literally building up our bodies and is contributing to our overall well being and living a life filled with grace and beauty. This is at least what food was supposed to do from the begging of human life and one of its most basic functions, but in an overcrowded market space, like the food market, things might sometimes get out of sight and dive into dangerous areas that might cause more harm than good to our bodies. In this situation I find it to be especially important to remind ourselves about the primary role of our eating process: to nourish and to nurture our bodies. When we think of food from this perspective we remind ourselves to be gentle and to choose awareness when it comes to the food choices that we make.

There is a strong connection between the way each food affects and interacts with our bodies and this has been showed by many traditional, holistic systems such as Ayurveda. Ayurveda reminds us of the subtle energies that are found in the foods that we eat and their effects on the human body. Of course those energies are then strongly related to specific states of mind such as, to call just a few of the most common ones,: calm, peaceful, focused, aggressive, sad etc. Ayurveda points out that there is a strong connection between the foods that we eat and the state of mind that we find ourselves in and this is also a two way process, so what this means is that by being in a specific state of mind we tend to choose foods that empower that specific characteristic, like for example calmness, but it also means that this process goes on the other way around, meaning that by eating specific foods, we trigger or we tend to a specific state of mind that those foods support, like for example lets take caffeine based products such as some teas, coffee, chocolate, etc which mostly have an energizing effect.

This being said I believe that our food and the choices that we make in relation to our meals are great opportunities to bring more awareness into our day to day lives and remember that they are deeply connected to our own well being and a state of mind that we can consciously choose to be involved in. By bringing more awareness to our lives and our day to day choices we can definitely make a powerful shift towards a happier and more fulfilling life cause after all we do have the power to live the life that we have always been dreaming of.
