Weekly Shopping: Fresh Produce

I go weekly to buy all the fresh produce that I am going to be using for the week ahead, I find it really great to plan and prepare in advance and also to have lots of veggies, fruits and greens in the house for any kind of delicious raw vegan goodness that I am going to be enjoying on a day to day basis. I get just about enough to have at home so that I can make sure I do consume produce as fresh as possible. I know that people might be thinking that farmers market is a great place to pick up fresh fruits, veggies and greens, but I have to say than I am not really that convinced that those places are always what they claim to be. So many times we see there tropical fruits, which are not really growing here in Romania so they can`t possibly be locally grown. Still, some place do really have farmers with local products. For my own convenience and because there is also a great variety of things to choose from, I decided to buy in generally from supermarkets which also have nowadays in store lots of local and even organic products, which is great.

Since its the start of the summer season now, it is really amazing and wonderful how many fresh products, which are also local or as close to the idea of local as possible, are to be found in the supermarkets or even at farmers markets. It is really great to have access to such an abundant and vibrant variety of fresh produce. I also found recently at one of the supermarkets in my neighborhood that this place started bringing some boxes packed with local and fresh veggies, such as my favorite one: salad mix, which has just about enough cucumbers, onions, peppers and tomatoes to have for one week. Its perfect. There are also other mixes such as for soups and stuff like that. I also get weekly a few packs of mixed greens, I simply love those mixes, they are already washed and ready to eat. I love to combine the soft greens (arugula, valerian, baby spinach )with the crunchier ones (iceberg, radicchio). Another item that I get as fresh produce would be fruit, that I also buy on a weekly basis. I do get in general two different fruits, like for example last week I had bananas and strawberries and for next week I am enjoying bananas and apricots and I also get those ones get just about enough to last me for one week.

I actually really enjoy getting fresh produce like this, on a weekly basis because it is really fun and I get to switch between different items so that I can make sure I am also getting all the nutrients and delicious nutrition that my body needs on a daily basis. I also think its great to plan and prepare in advance simply because it is so much easier to eat healthy, be healthy and stay healthy when we take time to create the environment that supports such health based choices. Convenience and affordability are also key terms that can help us stick to a healthy eating style so that we do not feel like eating healthy is taking away all of our resources. Fresh fruits and veggies are easy and simple to prepare and many of them are also super affordable. We can also apply a strategy of pairing one item that tends to be cheaper with another one that maybe it is a little bit pricey in order to not only have control of our budget but also indulge in nature`s goodness and embrace variety in our eating patterns as a natural way of living and being. Yum!
